Schröder - Model 2

Frank Schröder makes the finest handmade audiophile tonearms in the world today.

Frank Schroder's designs have received critical acclaim. His designs feature a tone arm that is suspended by a thread, with no bearing whatsoever. The amazing engineering feature is that he uses a magnet at the pivot point to stabilize the arm. At the bottom of the arm wand directly below the supporting thread are a pair of strong magnets that attract each other. This offers tremendous stability with absolutely no bearing resistance. The distance between the magnets can be adjusted for maximum performance.

The Model-2 was designed to compete sonically with tonearms twice its price. To reach this more affordable price point, some ease of adjustment was sacrificed along with arm wand selection and other options. However once you set up an arm for a cartridge there is no need to adjust it again, so there is little to be lost with this compromise.

REVIEW

Schröder Model 2

The Schröder tonearm is one of those rare audio products which has achieved classic status - long before it has gone out of production. However, the worldwide demand for Frank Schröder's creations far outstrips the capabilities of a single craftsman to meet.  Frank controls every step in a tonearm's production. You are purchasing an item which is made one at a time, by Frank himself, and not on an assembly line. You can be assured that every Schröder tonearm built today has Frank's personal touch in it.

It is understandably difficult, but the wait for a Schröder is insignificant compared to the sonic rewards one will get.

Schroeders are for music lovers and knowledgeable audiophiles. These designs once and for all render irrelevant the endless arguments of musicality vs. accuracy.

Models are primarily distinguished by their bearing, arm wand, and headshell construction.

Frank Schroeder's innovative solutions to tonearm design may lead you to the false conclusion that this is a tweaker's tonearm which is difficult to set up. Nothing could be farther from the truth. These tonearms are a joy to setup. Designed and built by a former watchmaker with all the accuracy and attention to detail you would expect.

Features

  • Arm wand material - Carbon Fiber standard or optional Pertinax (resin impregnated paper - see below).

Both materials have a constrained layer damping construction. The Pertinax looks more like wood and has none of the carbon fiber's sonic signature - bringing it closer to the wooden wands in this respect.

  • Effective length - 239mm (222mm pivot to spindle)
  • Effective mass - 12 g. - compatible with most popular moving coil cartridges
(mass range is extendable with optional brass cartridge carrier)
  • Wiring - continuous run of proprietary solid-core copper from cartridge clips to male RCA Plugs. Incognito also available.
  • Termination - Eichman Bullet Plugs (male RCA) or optional female RCAs on hardwood mounting plate.
  • Mounting pattern - one bolt pattern, compatible with DPS.

"The Schroeder has evolved out of a true passion for tone arm design, and Frank Schroeder has orders to fill out for a long time. The delivery time for an example of the Reference is about 4 months at this moment.."

"The match of the Verdier Platine and the Schroeder is just heaven, words cannot describe the feelings when the needle touches the groove."

"To illustrate, I recently auditioned what may be the finest-sounding analog rig I've ever heard: a DPS 'table mated with a Schroder tonearm and an Allaerts cartridge. These three companies didn't even exist a few years ago, and now I can't even buy this superb set-up, which retails for a shade over $10K, because everyone is back-ordered for months. Name one digital product right now that's back-ordered."

Frank Schroder has been making tonearms since 1980.

DPS 3 Main difference between the dps 2 and dps 3 is in the upgraded motor/power supply. To answer the question, yes it is worth the extra outlay in funds. If you havn't heard it then you could happily go through life secure in the knowledge that you have an excellent turntable, in fact one of the very best. However hear the difference the dps 3 makes and you just have to have it, much closer to the master tape than it has any right to be at anything near this price.

Continuum Caliburn Reference Turntable SystemIt simply has no peers this is a significant step forward in analogue design and as such can only be compared to live music which is no bad thing. It may not be affordable but then the best in the world seldom is. The select few who can afford it are in for a rollercoaster ride through their album collections.

Triplanar Precision Tone arm MKVII Why do triplanar only produce one tone arm? Simply because it is the best tone arm that they can produce and is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest tone arms in the world. Good accurate engineering costs money and takes time which is reflected in the very reasonable cost for such an item.
